Kiyomizu Ware Gohonte Mubyo Matcha Bowl
Introducing the mubyo (Six Gourd) matcha bowl from Kiyomizu ware.
It is crafted by throwing thin, light brown clay on a potter’s wheel and applying a powdered glaze.
The bowl is hand-painted with four gourds on the outside and two on the inside.
The gourds are depicted in white, blue, yellow, and pink, creating a vibrant color scheme.
The “Six Gourd” design symbolizes “mubyo” (meaning “no illness” or “good health”), and conveys a wish for “good health and safety,” making it an auspicious tea bowl.
Traditionally, gourds, which have an expanding shape, have been used widely as amulets and for warding off evil since ancient times.
Due to their trailing vines and abundant fruit, they symbolize “prosperity for descendants” and “the flourishing of the family business.” It is also well-known that Toyotomi Hideyoshi used the “Sen-nari Hyotan” (Thousand Gourd) as his battle standard, representing “prayers for victory” and “advancement and success.”
The bowl is lightweight, with a thin body and visible wheel marks. Its surface is a warm-toned Honte with a slight reddish hue, providing a cozy texture.
Slightly smaller in size, it fits comfortably in the hand, making it a charming and easy-to-handle matcha bowl.
