Bizen Ware Crouching Hanging Flower Vase
Introducing a hanging flower vase from Bizen Ware.
Bizen Ware is pottery made around the Bizen area in Okayama Prefecture. It is fired without any glaze using an “oxidation flame firing” process, which allows the natural texture and character of the clay to be fully appreciated.
Due to the unique properties of Bizen clay, it is said that flower vases made from this material help prevent water from spoiling and keep flowers fresh longer. Similarly, teacups made from Bizen are believed to enhance the flavor of water and tea, making them smoother.
This particular flower vase has been fired using the “Goma” technique, where ash from pinewood used as fuel during firing adheres to the surface and melts, creating a pattern resembling sesame seeds scattered over the surface.
The shape of this hanging flower vase is called “Uzukumaru” (crouching), as it resembles a person crouching down, hence the name.
Originally created during the Muromachi period, these vessels were used by farmers as containers for beans, seeds, or oil. Over time, tea enthusiasts adapted these functional items for use as hanging flower vases, a tradition that continues today.
The front of the vase features a dimple, and the upper part is subtly carved around the circumference, creating an interesting visual texture.
On the back of the vase, there is a metal hook for hanging, making it easy to display on a tea room’s tokonoma (alcove), or on the wall or pillar of a private or public space. It can be casually hung to enjoy the beauty of a few flowers, evoking the serene and understated beauty of the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

备前烧 蹲式挂花器

备前烧是在冈山县备前市周边地区制作的陶器，采用不使用釉料的“氧化焰烧成”工艺，烧制而成，能够让人感受到泥土本身的风味。
备前烧以其土质的特性而闻名，使用此类花器时，有人称其能使水不易腐坏，花卉也能保持更久的鲜活；而用于茶杯等器具时，盛放的水或茶的味道会更加醇厚。
这款花器采用了“胡麻”烧制方法。所谓“胡麻”，是在烧制过程中，燃料松木的木屑灰分附着在器物表面，并与之溶解，形成类似撒上胡麻的效果。
这款挂花器的形状被称为“蹲”，其外形像人蹲坐的姿势，因此得名。最初，这种器具在室町时代作为农家的豆入、种壶、油壶等使用，后来受到茶人喜爱，逐渐被用作挂花器，延续至今。
花器的正面有一个小凹陷，顶部环绕一圈削边，展现出独特的变化。
花器背面装有挂钩，可以挂在吊挂架、茶室的地柱、墙壁等地方，甚至家庭、工作场所或公共场合，也可以随意悬挂并欣赏。
这款花器适合插少量花卉，通过简约的花艺感知季节的变化，展示出侘茶与寂茶的优雅世界。
