This is a wooden soup bowl from Yamanaka lacquerware, carved from horse chestnut wood and finished with lacquer.
Slightly larger than a standard soup bowl, it is made by hollowing out the wood, applying a base coat of red lacquer, then coating it with black lacquer, and finally polishing it back to reveal the red beneath—creating the “Akebono” (dawn) finish.
The exposed red lacquer underlayer forms horizontal, flowing brush-mark-like lines across the surface. The interior is finished in a simple, bright solid red.
With a slightly larger capacity, it can be used not only for miso soup, but also for small rice bowls, ozōni (New Year’s soup), kenchin-jiru, or other soups rich with ingredients.
The overall form is rounded, with a gentle curve near the foot, which is one of its distinguishing features. The wide mouth makes it easy to use and to wash.
Lightweight and easy to handle, the bowl has a stable, well-crafted foot. You can feel both the quality of the carved construction and the warmth of natural wood.
