Yamanaka Lacquerware – Wooden Tea Caddy (Chaoke), Black, Urushi Lacquer
This is an introduction to a wooden tea caddy from Yamanaka lacquerware.
It is a type of usucha (thin tea) container used in the tea ceremony for preparing and serving matcha (usucha).
The chaoke tea caddy is also known as “chaoke” or “satsū.”
Its origin lies in portable containers for matcha that were introduced from China during the Kamakura period.
Later, Sen no Rikyū refined its form, and it is said to have evolved into the shape seen today.
Because the joint (aikuchi) is located at the upper part, the lid is shallow, placing this piece in the category of natsume-type tea caddies.
Two raised bands are formed around the body, creating a design that evokes the original tea bucket.
It belongs to the group known as the “Six Usuki Tea Containers” (Usuki Rokki), and is also counted among the Omotesenke school’s “Jōshin-sai Twelve Tea Containers” and the Urasenke school’s “Sensō Twelve Tea Containers,” showing that it has been valued since ancient times.
Finished in simple black ma-nuri (solid black lacquer), it is a timeless, understated tea caddy—durable, suitable for long-term use, and firmly supported by history.
