Made in Japan – Thin Rectangular “Hamaguriba” Cedar Wood Flower Stand (Usuita)
This is a Japanese-made usuita (thin wooden board) with a rectangular shape and hamaguriba (clam-edged) design.
An usuita is a thin wooden board placed beneath a flower vase (hanaire), serving as a kind of stand when displaying the vase in a tokonoma (alcove).
The term hamaguriba refers to the distinctive finish on all four edges, shaped to resemble the sharp, matched lips of a clam shell.
This usuita belongs to the “Sō” (informal) category within the tea ceremony classifications of “Shin, Gyō, Sō” — formal, semi-formal, and informal styles used in daily tea gatherings.
“Shin” is used for formal tea ceremonies, such as offerings to deities or noble guests, while “Gyō” lies between Shin and Sō.
To harmonize with this usuita, it is recommended to select a flower vase that also belongs to the Sō category.
Flower vases classified as Sō typically include unglazed or naturally glazed pottery, such as Iga ware, Shigaraki ware, Bizen ware, or Tamba ware.
Bamboo vases may also be used for this style.
In the tea ceremony, such conventions exist for good reason — following them helps to enhance the natural beauty of both the flowers and the utensils.
As this usuita is made from natural Japanese cedar, the wood grain varies from piece to piece, giving each one its own unique character.
