Karakane is a type of bronze made from copper alloyed with small amounts of lead or tin, giving it a blackish tone. The manufacturing process originally came from China, which is why it is called Karakane—meaning “copper from the Tang (Dynasty).”
The “crane neck” refers to a specific shape, where the vase has a slender, elongated neck resembling the neck of a crane. This type of flower vase is a classic choice for tea flowers and is considered to be of high rank, belonging to the “shin” (formal) category.
