Hida Shunkei Lacquerware: Wooden Six-Inch Octagonal Bowl
Introducing a wooden octagonal bowl made from Hida Shunkei lacquerware.
The material is natural wood over 200 years old, which is dried for several years to prevent warping and deformation.
Only after this process can the wood be properly used.
It is coated with genuine urushi, and the indescribable luster and texture of the lacquer make it a top-quality item that requires skilled craftsmanship.
The lacquering process involves at least nine steps: wood surface preparation, sealing, coloring, undercoating, finishing polish, applying urushi, wrapping with koksu, applying urushi again, top coating, and drying.
During the drying phase, care is taken to prevent dust accumulation, and to avoid “lacquer drips,” the bowl is rotated every few minutes while drying.
Genuine urushi lacquer maintains its excellent texture over time and is highly durable.
The urushi coating continues to breathe semi-permanently, providing good breathability. Additionally, urushi has antibacterial properties that protect ingredients from harmful bacteria, helping to keep food fresh longer.
The bowl has a flat bottom and straight, upward-facing edges, making it easy to serve sweets or ingredients.
The overall shape is octagonal, with flared edges that give it auspicious qualities.
