Kyo-yaki (Kiyomizu-yaki) Shakutate by Shoraku Sasaki – Aka-Raku with Bamboo Leaf Motif
We are pleased to introduce this shakutate (ladle stand) crafted by Shoraku Sasaki, a renowned artisan of Kyo-yaki (Kiyomizu ware).
A shakutate is a utensil used in the tea ceremony to hold the hishaku (ladle) and hibashi (fire tongs). It is considered one of the items in a kaigu (complete set of tea utensils) and is used in full settings such as on a daisu (formal stand), naga-ita (long board), or ryurei (standing-style tea ceremony).
Raku ware is said to have been originated by a naturalized craftsman known as Ameya (father of Chōjirō, the first generation of the Raku family). It is believed that Tanaka Sōkei received a gold seal with the character “Raku” from Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which led to the ware being named “Raku-yaki.”
Raku ware is a uniquely Japanese ceramic form that emerged alongside the flourishing of the tea ceremony. Its qualities—texture, shape, color—are all in harmony with the spirit of chanoyu (the way of tea).
It is said that Sen no Rikyū guided the first-generation Raku potter, Chōjirō, in the making of Raku ware.
Early aka-raku (red Raku) is believed to have used Juraku clay. Red glaze was applied over the base clay as a decorative layer, then a highly transparent glaze was added before firing at relatively low temperatures.
Raku ware is a type of soft earthenware shaped by hand. Among them, aka-raku was especially favored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
This particular shakutate features three vertically aligned bamboo leaf motifs carved from the area below the mouth. These motifs are indented and filled with white glaze, which stands out beautifully against the red body.
The body has a rounded form, giving it a soft and gentle impression.
It is stable and practical—an easy-to-use shakutate.
