The History of Raku Ware:
Raku ware is believed to have been founded by Ameya, a Korean potter and the father of the first-generation Raku master, Chōjirō. The name “Raku” originates from the gold seal bearing the character 楽 (Raku), which was granted to Tanaka Sōkei by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Raku ware is a uniquely Japanese art form that emerged with the rise of the tea ceremony. Its qualities—such as texture, shape, and color—are in perfect harmony with the principles of chanoyu (the way of tea).
It is said that Sen no Rikyū guided Chōjirō, the first Raku master, in creating Raku ware, with black Raku being a particular favorite of Rikyū.
