A Suihatsu Hanging Panel with Fittings, 93 cm — Designed for Modern Interiors
Here is a Japanese-made wooden suihatsu, redesigned so that it can also be used in contemporary homes.
A suihatsu is a traditional Japanese hanging panel made of wood or bamboo, used for displaying hanging flower vases, poem slips (tanzaku), or decorative fans. The name derives from its resemblance to the plectrum used for playing the biwa lute.
They are commonly made from cedar, bamboo, or paulownia. The center features a long vertical slot that allows the hanging hook to slide freely up and down, letting you adjust the position of the hanging flower vase. With an optional fitting attached to the slot, tanzaku or decorative fans can also be displayed.
A suihatsu is extremely useful when space for flowers or calligraphy is limited. For outdoor tea gatherings (nodate), when there are no walls or pillars available, it can even be attached to the nodate umbrella.
In ordinary households, as long as there is a small space at the entrance or on a pillar, one can enjoy seasonal flowers, together with tanzaku inscribed with Zen aphorisms or decorative fans that reflect the changing seasons.
Perhaps it is precisely because Japan has four distinct seasons that such a tool was created to allow people to feel the rhythm of the seasons even in the smallest of spaces.
It is an ideal furnishing for modern homes that may not have a tokonoma alcove or traditional tatami rooms—especially when you wish to add a “wa-modern” (Japanese modern) touch to a natural or Western-style interior. It is suitable for decorating even small spaces with a hanging single-flower vase.
A standard fitting for hanging flower vases is included. The top of the panel is reinforced with metal hardware for added durability.
Incorporating traditional Japanese interior elements into modern living can create a refined and stylish atmosphere.
This suihatsu uses select cedar with fine straight grain (masame). Because it is made from natural cedar shaped entirely by hand, individual pieces may show natural grain variations, minor abrasion from hand-finishing, and natural surface irregularities.
