Shigaraki Ware — Flower Vase (Henkotsubo) by Zuiho, Kiln-Altered Finish
This is a handmade flower vase by Zuiho in Shigaraki ware.
It is thrown on a potter’s wheel using brown clay.
A henko-tsubo refers to a flattened vessel form in which the body appears compressed. One can see that the thrown shape has been flattened after wheel-forming.
The clay contains small stones, and the surface retains wheel marks, giving it a rugged, rustic character.
The front has turned dark due to kiln alteration (yōhen), enhancing the depth and appeal unique to earthenware.
With its voluminous body, the vase has a solid and weighty presence.
Because the mouth is small, a modest number of flowers will stand out beautifully.
The slender, slightly flared mouth helps hold stems in place, making the vase both practical and easy to arrange flowers in.
Its subdued and refined atmosphere complements flowers rather than overpowering them, making it a vase that one can enjoy for many years without tiring of it.
