Sanuki Lacquerware – Wooden Carved Round Tray, Zōkoku-style with Vermilion Rim, Urushi Lacquer, 30 cm
From Sanuki lacquerware, we present a round tray carved from natural wood.
The base wood is infused with natural urushi lacquer, carefully polished in, and then finished through multiple layers of application.
“Zōkoku-nuri” takes its name from Tamakaji Zōkoku, the founder of Kagawa lacquer art, and has since come to be known as such.
The wooden base, shaped on a lathe, is first hardened. Raw lacquer is repeatedly brushed and rubbed into the surface, after which makomo (a perennial grass of the rice family found growing along riversides and ponds) is sprinkled onto the lacquer. More lacquer is then polished in to complete the finish.
With years of use, the tray develops a lustrous sheen and distinctive shadows, enhancing its subdued elegance.
Zōkoku-nuri is exceptionally durable, making it lacquerware well-suited for everyday use.
The pronounced lathe marks across the surface create a rugged texture that adds to the unique design, while also conveying the warmth of handcrafted work and serving as a natural non-slip feature.
The rim of the tray is finished in vermilion, contrasting beautifully with the deep black of Zōkoku lacquer, each color enhancing the other.
Its simple design highlights the natural texture of the material, ensuring it remains timeless and suitable for long years of use.

其上撒布采自河畔或池塘中丛生的禾本科多年草——真菰茎中的纤维，
再继续擦入漆料，直至完成。
经年累月的使用，会逐渐呈现出光泽与独特的阴影，愈发显得沉稳醇厚。
象谷涂漆器质地坚固，非常适合在日常生活中反复使用。
整只托盘表面保留了车旋加工的木纹纹路，
既表现出粗犷之美，又成为独特的设计，
同时兼具手工的温润感与防滑的实用效果。
盘的边缘施以朱漆，与象谷的黑色形成鲜明对比，
相互映衬，使两种色彩更加突出。
