Kiyomizu Ware – Handmade Namban Mishima Matcha Bowl
Introducing a handmade Namban Mishima matcha bowl from Kiyomizu ware.
The term “Namban” refers to pottery that was historically fired in southern foreign regions. It does not indicate any specific country or kiln. These were unglazed, high-fired wares produced mainly in Southeast Asia and other southern areas, characterized by their rough texture and earthy appearance. They are often dark brown or blackish in color. Even when made in Japan, if the piece follows this rustic, unglazed southern style, it is referred to as Namban.
The Mishima design here is created using a technique called inka (stamping). Floral-shaped stamps are pressed one by one by hand onto the surface of the bowl. Clay is then rubbed into the indented areas, making the flower patterns appear to float from within the dark background.
Usually, white clay is used for this inlay, but in this piece, blue clay has been applied instead, giving it a refreshing and refined appearance.
Stamps decorate nearly the entire exterior of the bowl, as well as the interior except for the chadamari (the central area where the tea pools), showcasing both a high level of craftsmanship and the immense labor involved.
The bowl itself is thrown on the wheel from dark clay, with a softly rounded shape and a slightly compact size that fits comfortably in the hand.
Its simple, timeless design ensures it can be enjoyed for many years to come.
