Mino Ware — Kaiji Tsukamoto, Kaizan Kiln — Seihakuji (Blue-White Porcelain), Seigaiha Motif — 8-sun Plate (24.8 cm)
We are pleased to present an 8-sun seihakuji plate from Mino ware.
This vessel is from the Kaizan Kiln of Kaiji Tsukamoto, a Living National Treasure.
The seihakuji, with its refined and elegant beauty and its indescribably lovely pale aqua-blue tone, is truly superbly finished.
So closely is seihakuji associated with the Kaizan Kiln that it is often said, “When it comes to seihakuji, it is Kaizan,” and the kiln is extremely well known within Mino ware.
The translucent seihakuji, tinged with just a hint of blue, beautifully showcases the carved Seigaiha (blue ocean waves) motif, allowing one to sense a dignified elegance.
Seigaiha is a traditional pattern composed of overlapping semicircular concentric waves.
It takes its name from being dyed on the garments of dancers performing the gagaku piece “Seigaiha,” and has long been a famous and auspicious motif.
Because ocean waves continue endlessly without interruption, the pattern is regarded as a felicitous design symbolizing good fortune.
This vessel can be called the pinnacle of beauty, into which graceful design and a high level of craftsmanship have been poured.
