Mino Ware – Ryōji Hayashi, Syōzan Kiln – Beni-Shino (Red Shino) Rice Bowl
This is a rice bowl by Ryōji Hayashi of Syōzan Kiln, crafted in the Shino style of Mino ware.
Shino ware requires an extremely labor-intensive firing process, demanding specialized expertise and unique techniques. Because of this, it is extremely difficult to reproduce outside its place of origin, and true Shino ware can only be found within Mino ware, making it a distinctive and exclusive ceramic tradition of Mino.
Shino possesses a world of its own, shaped by natural elements beyond human control. No two pieces can ever be identical, making it truly an “art of fire.”
This rice bowl is called Beni-Shino (Red Shino), characterized by a soft pinkish hue, presenting a remarkably beautiful coloration. The surface shows natural crackling in the glaze and countless pinholes, with some areas revealing the underlying clay, creating a powerful, expressive texture.
The piece also features abundant crazing, a hallmark of earthenware, which enhances its character. Formed on the potter’s wheel from light brown clay, it is coated with a relatively thick glaze, giving the bowl a substantial and weighty presence.
Around the rim, an iron-painted line is drawn, and flowing drips of white glaze can be seen—both serving as distinctive traits of this work.
This piece is an excellent example that fully conveys the appeal of earthenware and the warmth of Shino.
