Made in Japan – Toratake Bamboo Chawan-tsutsu (Tea Bowl Holder)
This is a introduction of a bamboo chawan-tsutsu (tea bowl holder) made in Japan.
A chawan-tsutsu is a small cylinder used to hold a small tea bowl for sencha (green tea) ceremonies. Depending on the style, it typically holds between five to ten tea bowls stacked inside.
To facilitate easy access, a portion of the front is open vertically. While this chawan-tsutsu isn’t particularly large, the bamboo weaving is very intricate, with reinforced areas at the rim and base, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship.
The outer surface is made from bamboo skin, giving it a smooth finish. This holder uses “toratake” bamboo, which has a mix of brown hues, creating a natural pattern that evokes a sense of wabi-sabi.
The tea bowls used in sencha ceremonies are slightly smaller, as they are designed to savor the sweetness and umami of high-quality tea leaves rather than to quench thirst. The small size allows one to sip the tea slowly, appreciating its flavors.
Additionally, it is customary to brew the same tea leaves multiple times—first, second, and third infusions—allowing the taste to change with each brew, which is another reason for the smaller bowl size.
Please ensure that the tea bowls you use are smaller in diameter than the inner diameter of this chawan-tsutsu.
Outer diameter (top): 8 cm
Inner diameter (top): 7 cm
Height: 12 cm
