Kyo-yaki (Kiyomizu ware) – Hand-Painted Matcha Bowl with Gold Decoration and Shippo (Seven Treasures) Motif
This is an introduction to a color-painted matcha bowl featuring the traditional shippo motif, crafted in Kiyomizu ware.
The bowl is formed on the potter’s wheel using white clay, and the shippo pattern on the exterior is entirely hand-painted—an extremely labor-intensive process that requires advanced skill.
Shippo is a type of traditional pattern composed of four interlinked spindle-shaped forms, creating an “overlapping rings” design. The circular motifs symbolize the continuation of harmony and are considered an auspicious, celebratory pattern. In the tea ceremony, it frequently appears and is regarded as a classic motif.
The green glaze has a beautiful color and luster, giving the piece a refreshing atmosphere. The raised application of the green glaze creates a slightly three-dimensional effect.
Painting identical motifs around the curved surface of a bowl is far more difficult than one might imagine. The pattern must connect seamlessly all the way around, and toward the lower part of the bowl the motifs become gradually smaller, demanding precise and meticulous technique.
The edges of the green-glazed areas are finely outlined with gold, adding both delicacy and a sense of luxury.
The interior of the bowl is plain white, allowing you to fully appreciate the color and texture of the matcha.
It is remarkably light, offering a sense of delicacy in the hand.
