Kiyomizu Ware – Handmade “Sansai Horse” by Raku Nyū Yoshimura
Introducing a handmade “Sansai Horse” by Raku Nyū Yoshimura from Kiyomizu ware.
This is a ceramic horse made in the Raku-yaki style, decorated with three-colored (sansai) glazes—yellow, green, and reddish-brown.
Yellow glaze is used as the main color, while the horse is adorned with a finely modeled saddle and ornamental details. The glazes are carefully applied and separated to highlight the intricate craftsmanship.
The deep, rich yellow and the dense green glaze create a lustrous and elegant appearance.
Natural crackle patterns (kannyū) and graceful drips in the glaze give the piece a distinctive character and refined presence.
Since ancient times, horses have been regarded as sacred animals and divine messengers, often dedicated to Shinto shrines. They are believed to bring protection from misfortune and promote prosperity.
During the Warring States period, horses were indispensable to victory in battle, and even today they are seen as symbols of good fortune in competition, career advancement, and business success.
The saying “Uma ku iku” (a play on the phrase “Uma ku iku”, literally “things go well”) originates from the expression “If there are nine horses, one will survive from nine deaths,” implying that everything will turn out well—making the horse a cherished symbol of good luck.
Horses are also considered to attract wealth and fortune, so displaying a horse figurine is thought to enhance one’s luck and prosperity.
