Kiyomizu Ware Nanban Mishima-Style Rice Bowls (Pair)
Introducing a pair of handmade rice bowls from Kiyomizu Ware.
The term “Nanban” refers to pottery made in the southern regions of foreign lands, and does not refer to products from a specific country or kiln.
This style originates from Southeast Asia and other tropical regions, known for unglazed, tightly fired pottery with a rough texture, giving it a rustic, earthy feel.
Though many of these pieces are brown or dark in color, even if made in Japan, pottery with this style is referred to as “Nanban.”
The Mishima technique involves pressing flower-shaped stamps known as “Inka” onto the surface of the pottery by hand. The imprints are then filled with colored clay, and when viewed, flowers emerge from the black surface.
On the smaller rice bowl, faint red flowers appear, while on the larger bowl, pale blue flowers rise to the surface. This vibrant splash of color contrasts with the subdued, earthy tones of the Nanban style, adding a lively touch.
The process requires significant effort and high craftsmanship, with each piece being meticulously crafted.
The interior of the bowls is white, while the exterior bears the imprints of the Inka, offering a glimpse into the handmade nature and earthy charm of the pottery.
Though the bowls have a solid, weighty appearance, they are formed on the wheel, making them relatively lightweight and easy to handle.
