Kiyomizu-yaki Nanban Misima Matcha Bowl
Introducing a matcha bowl from Kiyomizu-yaki, featuring the Nanban Misima design.
“Nanban” refers to ceramics that were fired in the distant southern lands of the past. It does not indicate products from a specific country or kiln. These are unglazed, kiln-fired ceramics made in Southeast Asia and other southern regions, characterized by a rough surface and a rustic, earthy appearance.
Most Nanban ceramics are dark brown, and even if made in Japan, if they exhibit this style, they are referred to as “Nanban.”
The Misima pattern is created by hand-stamping floral-shaped impressions called “Inka” onto the surface of the bowl. The areas where the impressions are pressed in are then filled with soil, making the flowers stand out against the dark background.
Typically, white soil is used to fill the impressions, but in this case, blue soil has been used, giving it a fresh and sophisticated look.
The exterior of the matcha bowl is almost entirely covered with the Misima pattern, and the interior, except for the area where the matcha is held, also features these impressions, showcasing advanced craftsmanship and meticulous effort.
The bowl is made from black clay turned on a wheel, rounded, and slightly smaller in size, fitting comfortably in the hand with a compact form. It has a simple, timeless design that allows for long-term use.
