Kashū Kōki Work, Tantan-sai Style, Sunrise Crane Incense Container, Paulownia Wood
Introducing an incense container (kōgo) by Kōki, from the Kashū (Kaga) region.
A kōgo is a lidded vessel used to hold incense, commonly placed on a charcoal container (sumitori) during tea ceremonies, or displayed on a fukusa (silk cloth) or paper brazier mat in the tokonoma (alcove).
During the summer, incense is often stored in lacquerware, while during the colder months, when kneaded incense is used, ceramic vessels are more commonly employed.
Kōgo are often considered ornamental, and there are many different types.
This particular kōgo is crafted from paulownia wood, with an elegant crane design carved into the surface. The crane’s beak, eyes, and wings are highlighted with gold paint.
When the lid is opened, the central area where the incense is placed is painted in a rich vermilion color, and the surrounding area is decorated with gold specks, creating a luxurious and festive atmosphere.
The combination of the natural wood, gold, and vermilion gives the piece a refined, fresh, and clean aesthetic.
The crane, symbolizing longevity and good fortune, makes this incense container especially suitable for celebrations of long life or other auspicious occasions.
