Hagi Ware – Handmade Hōhin (Teapot without Handle), White Glaze
We are pleased to introduce a Hōhin from Hagi ware.
A Hōhin is a type of teapot without a handle, traditionally used for serving high-grade teas such as gyokuro in the art of sencha.
The absence of a handle is due to the fact that fine teas like gyokuro are not brewed with boiling water. Instead, the water is cooled beforehand using a yuzamashi (cooling vessel), so the pot does not become too hot to hold, eliminating the need for a handle.
In addition, to prevent any metallic flavor from affecting the tea, there is no metal mesh strainer. Instead, small holes are made on the inside of the spout for filtering.
The capacity is 200 ml when filled to the brim, suitable for serving one person.
This piece is crafted by wheel-throwing brown clay and applying a white glaze.
With a bold and robust form, it features a wide mouth that makes it easy to add tea leaves, discard them, and clean the pot. The design combines functionality with elegance.
A simple yet refined piece, filled with the maker’s high level of craftsmanship, it is made to be used and cherished for many years.
