Hagi Ware – Handmade Cylindrical Matcha Bowl by Koyo Hayashi (Gohon Style)
This is a handcrafted cylindrical matcha bowl made by Koyo Hayashi, a potter of Hagi ware.
It is wheel-thrown using clay unique to Hagi, which naturally contains small stones.
The bowl is finished with a glaze, and distinctive speckled patterns known as gohon can be seen in several places, giving the piece a warm reddish tone and a bright, inviting appearance.
A cylindrical tea bowl (tsutsu chawan) differs from a regular matcha bowl in that it has a smaller mouth and a taller body.
The name comes from its tube-like shape.
It is mainly used in the cold winter months—because of its narrow opening, the surface area exposed to the air is smaller, helping to keep the matcha warm longer.
This design reflects the thoughtful hospitality of wishing to serve matcha that stays warm as long as possible.
The bowl’s body features a gentle constriction at the center, with visible potter’s wheel marks and carved facets, creating a form full of movement that fits comfortably in the hand.
Natural glaze drips enhance its rustic charm and evoke a sense of quiet elegance.
It is a matcha bowl that nestles perfectly in the hand, displaying fine crackle patterns (kannyū) and tiny pinholes, characteristic of Hagi ware.
With continued use, you can enjoy the “Seven Transformations of Hagi”, as its appearance deepens and changes beautifully over time.
