Hagi Ware – Hirachawan (Flat Tea Bowl) by Koyo Hayashi – Biwa Glaze
Introducing a hirachawan (flat tea bowl) by Koyo Hayashi, crafted in the tradition of Hagi ware.
This type of matcha bowl, often referred to as a natsu chawan (summer tea bowl) or hirachawan, is typically used during the warmer months.
Compared to a standard tea bowl, it has a lower profile and a wider mouth, designed to help the tea cool more quickly and offer a refreshing experience during hot weather.
Formed on the potter’s wheel using reddish-brown clay, the bowl is finished with a soft biwa-colored glaze.
The biwa (loquat) glaze has a uniquely gentle and refined character, evoking a quiet elegance.
Wheel marks (rokuro-me) are visible around the body, and the surface shows a natural ruggedness with numerous kannyu (fine glaze crazing) and pinholes, adding to its rustic charm.
A white glaze is applied near the rim and upper section, imparting a refreshing and cool impression.
The bowl fits comfortably in the hands, offering a perfect size and balance. It is a fine example that embodies the essence of Hagi ware.
With continued use over the years, you can enjoy the distinctive transformation known as Hagi no Nanahenge—the evolving beauty of Hagi ware.
