Echizen Lacquerware – Wooden Curved Kensui (Waste-Water Bowl), Tamenuri Exterior with Black Interior, Urushi Lacquer Finish
We are pleased to introduce a wooden curved kensui from Echizen lacquerware.
A kensui is a vessel used in the tea ceremony for discarding the water used to rinse the matcha bowl.
The character 「建」 carries the meaning of tilting and pouring out, and the kensui is also commonly referred to as a “koboshi” (spiller / pouring-out basin).
This piece is entirely crafted from wood.
The sides are made from thin wooden boards that have been bent with boiling water, and the seam of the joint is visible.
The exterior of the side boards is decorated with fine horizontal lines, which serve as a distinctive feature.
The interior is finished in black lacquer, while the exterior is coated in tamenuri (reddish-brown translucent lacquer), giving the piece a calm and composed appearance.
Because it is lacquered with urushi, the surface has a soft, gently moist texture.
The bowl has a large diameter with straight, upright walls, making it easy to pour out hot water and convenient to use.
It is lightweight, easy to handle, and can be said to be a tool that conveys a sense of warmth and gentleness.
