Echizen Lacquer – Kizue – Paulownia Wood with Tame-nuri Finish
This is an introduction to an Echizen-lacquered kizue.
A kizue is a tea utensil made of four boards—approximately the same size as the lid of a chabako (tea box)—bound together with purple braided cords.
In the Chabako Setsugekka procedures, it is used during the “Moon” (Tsuki) temae.
The kizue is unfolded, and the utensils are placed on it while performing the procedure.
A tame-colored lacquer is applied over paulownia wood, allowing the natural grain of the wood to remain visible. The finish conveys both the refined feel of lacquer and the warmth of natural wood.
Utensils finished in tame-nuri have a soft, gentle appearance.
