Echizen Lacquerware – Chūnatsume by Miyata Sōkei – “Green Maple and Flowing Water” – White Lacquer Finish
Introducing a chūnatsume (medium-sized tea caddy) crafted by Miyata Sōkei in the traditional Echizen lacquerware style.
This tea caddy is made of wood and finished with layers of lacquer, over which maki-e (gold and silver powder decoration) is applied.
In the practice of tea ceremony, utensils used to hold powdered green tea (matcha) are collectively known as chaki (tea containers).
The natsume is a representative form used for thin tea (usucha), and it derives its name from its resemblance to the fruit of the jujube tree.
Among the various styles, the chūnatsume represents the standard form and size of the natsume.
While tea caddies are typically finished in black lacquer, this piece features a striking white lacquer base, upon which fresh green maple leaves are elegantly depicted.
In addition to the vivid green of the maple leaves, generous use of gold adds a sense of opulence.
At the lower section of the piece, flowing water is delicately painted in shades of blue, evoking a cool and refreshing scene.
Further enhancing the piece, small blue-hued shells are inlaid near the stream using the raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) technique.
This tea caddy is a rare example that harmoniously combines a sense of refreshing beauty with luxurious detail.
