Echizen Lacquerware – Wooden Tea Caddy, Chū-Natsume – Chrysanthemum and Paulownia Maki-e
This is an introduction to a wooden tea utensil, a chū-natsume, from Echizen lacquerware.
In the tea ceremony, this vessel is used for preparing usucha (thin tea).
Because its shape resembles the fruit of the jujube (natsume) plant,
it is referred to as a natsume form.
Its size is the medium of the three standard sizes—large, medium, and small—
and is therefore classified as a chū-natsume.
This tea caddy is decorated with kiku-kiri maki-e (chrysanthemum and paulownia maki-e).
Kiku-kiri maki-e is a type of maki-e motif that flourished during the Momoyama period,
and this piece has been created by reproducing that traditional design.
Painterly motifs are combined with decorative formal crests,
resulting in a rich and luxurious design.
The chrysanthemum and paulownia designs on the lid and the body
are each rendered in different patterns,
allowing for twice the enjoyment.
The splendid designs, making generous use of gold and red,
have been handed down through the ages and continue even today
to be used on a wide variety of tea utensils.
