Echizen Lacquerware – Wooden Chitose Tray (Chitose-bon), Kaki-awase Finish
Introducing a wooden Chitose-bon (Chitose tray) crafted in traditional Echizen lacquerware.
The Chitose-bon is a tea tray favored by Seikō-in, the wife of Tantansai, the fifteenth-generation head of the Urasenke school of tea, to commemorate Tantansai’s sixtieth birthday (kanreki).
There is said to be a formal bonryaku temae (tray-style tea procedure) that uses this Chitose-bon.
Even outside of formal tea ceremony practice, you can enjoy this tray in everyday settings—placing tea utensils on it, whisking matcha on the back of the lid, or using it to serve sencha to guests or for your own relaxation.
This Chitose-bon is made of wood. Both the body and the lid are constructed by bending thin sheets of wood to form the sides, then attaching the bottom and top panels. Compared to plastic versions, it is remarkably light and easy to handle.
Although originally a formal tea tray used in the tea ceremony, it can also be enjoyed as a practical everyday chabitsu (tea container or serving box).
Finished in a kaki-awase (blended lacquer) style rather than shin-nuri (high-gloss finish), it is less prone to showing scratches, allowing you to use it casually and comfortably.
