Echizen Lacquerware – Wooden Tea Box (Chabako)
Made of Paulownia Wood – Linen Texture – Negoro Lacquer Finish
We are pleased to introduce a wooden tea box (chabako) made from paulownia wood, finished in the traditional Echizen lacquerware style.
A chabako is a portable box designed to hold a complete set of tea utensils used for preparing tea during a tea ceremony.
(This item includes the box only.)
It is a wooden box used to prepare and enjoy matcha while traveling or during nodate (outdoor tea gatherings).
There are various materials and lacquer finishes for chabako, but the earliest type favored by Sen no Rikyu was made of plain paulownia wood,
while the Sotan style, preferred by his grandson Sotan, featured a vermilion lacquered ichikan-bari (paper-laminated) finish.
The box comes with a removable inner tray lid (kakeko-buta) that has a small opening to accommodate the tea whisk (chasen).
Originally, there were no fixed procedures (temae) associated with the chabako,
but in the Urasenke school, the tea procedure was later formalized by Gengensai Soshitsu.
This tea box is finished using the Negoro-nuri technique.
In this process, a black lacquer undercoat is first applied,
followed by a vermilion lacquer layer, which is then polished so that the underlying black subtly appears through the surface.
This delicate interplay of red and black tones is the hallmark of Negoro lacquer.
The exterior surface has a linen-like texture (nunome) with a matte finish,
creating a beautiful vintage atmosphere.
The historically rooted design exudes an elegant and dignified presence that reflects centuries of Japanese tradition.
The interior is finished in solid black, allowing the natural grain of the wood to show through.
This contrast between the interior and exterior gives the box a refined, timeless character—
a piece that can be enjoyed for many years without losing its charm.
Because it is very lightweight, it is easy to carry.
In the past, tea masters often brought such boxes with them on their travels,
enjoying tea wherever they went—
a reminder that chanoyu (the way of tea) was always a familiar and integral part of daily life.
The fine texture and appearance of the wood also make this box suitable for use as a storage or display box.
