Kiyomizu Ware – Set of Five Nanban Mishima Cups (Yunomi / Teacups)
Introducing a set of five Nanban Mishima-style yunomi (teacups) from Kiyomizu ware.
The term “Nanban” originally referred to unglazed, high-fired stoneware made in the southern regions such as Southeast Asia. These wares have a rough, earthy texture with a rustic, unrefined charm.
They are often dark brown to blackish in color, and even when produced in Japan, pottery made in this style is called “Nanban.”
The Mishima style, on the other hand, is characterized by “in-ka” decoration—small flower-shaped stamps impressed by hand onto the surface of the clay. White slip is then rubbed into the recessed stamped patterns, making delicate white floral motifs appear to float against the dark background.
The exterior of each cup is entirely covered with these stamped Mishima patterns, showcasing highly skilled craftsmanship and an extraordinary amount of manual work.
The body is wheel-thrown, making it lightweight and refined in feel.
The rim flares slightly outward, creating a smooth mouthfeel that makes the cups pleasant to drink from.
The cups stack neatly, allowing for easy storage without taking up much space.
This set exemplifies the mastery and precision of experienced artisans—truly a work of exceptional craftsmanship.
