Banko Ware – Handmade Heat-Resistant Teapot (Bōfura) – Gohon-style Yokote Kettle
This is a teapot made of Banko ware, designed for heating water directly over an open flame.
Crafted on the potter’s wheel from light brown clay,
this vessel is made of heat-resistant ceramic,
allowing it to be used directly over a flame for boiling water.
Traditionally used in the Sencha tea ceremony,
this type of vessel is known as a yuwakashi or bōfura,
and is placed atop a small stove called a ryōro for heating water.
Although made from earthenware, it is delicately crafted with thin walls,
making it surprisingly lightweight and refined—
a testament to the artisan’s high level of skill.
The surface reveals the potter’s wheel marks
and features kiln variations known as gohon,
a reddish hue that adds warmth and character typical of earthenware.
Its distinctive form features a rounded body with tapered top and bottom,
and a side handle in the traditional yokote style.
Inside the spout are several small holes
to strain the tea leaves as you pour,
ensuring a smooth, leaf-free pour.
This vessel allows you to boil water directly and brew tea with leaves,
making it possible to enjoy tea at its most flavorful.
