Kiyomizu-yaki Gohon Six Melon-shaped Rice Bowls
We are pleased to introduce a set of rice bowls featuring the Gohon (traditional Kyo-yaki) style with melon-shaped gourds.
Gohon refers to a reddish, soft texture and spotted patterns that give a subtly gentle appearance. Each of these rice bowls is adorned with six melon-shaped gourds. The colors are vibrant and varied, including green, burgundy, yellow, purple, and blue, making these bowls visually enjoyable.
The “Six Melons” (Rokubyo) is a play on the word “mubyo” (無病), meaning “free from illness,” and symbolizes “good health and safety from disease.” The melon shape, traditionally associated with protection and warding off evil, is used in these bowls to convey good fortune.
The gourd shape has been a symbol of protection and fortune for a long time, with its spreading vines and abundant fruit signifying “prosperity for descendants” and “growth of the family business.” It is famously known that Toyotomi Hideyoshi used the gourd symbol on his war banners, representing “prayers for victory” and “success in life.”
The melons are meticulously hand-painted, with the tying cords depicted in red and outlined in gold, incorporating a variety of colors. These bowls make for an excellent gift for weddings, golden and silver anniversaries, or as a memorable present for couples, incorporating the auspicious symbolism of the gourd.
These rice bowls are elegant and stylish.
