Kiyomizu Ware – Nanban Mishima Pattern Rice Bowl Pair
Introducing a handcrafted rice bowl pair from Kiyomizu ware.
The term “Nanban” refers to pottery that was once fired in foreign lands to the south, rather than products from a specific country or kiln.
It typically describes unglazed, high-fired pottery made in tropical regions such as Southeast Asia. These pieces have a rough, textured surface and an earthy, rustic feel. Even if produced in Japan, pottery with this style is also referred to as “Nanban.”
This Mishima piece features “Inka” (stamped decoration), where floral patterns are individually imprinted by hand onto the surface. Colored clay is then carefully rubbed into the recessed areas of the impressions, creating a striking contrast where the flowers appear to emerge against the dark background.
The smaller bowl features softly tinted pink flowers, while the larger bowl showcases pale bluish-white blossoms. These subtle hues add a lively touch of color to the subdued Nanban aesthetic.
Each piece is crafted with meticulous care and advanced artisanal techniques.
The interior of the bowls is left white, and the impressions from the stamped patterns on the exterior subtly appear through, enhancing the handmade character and natural charm of the clay.
While the appearance suggests a substantial weight, the bowls are wheel-thrown, making them relatively lightweight and easy to handle.
Dimensions:
Large Bowl: Diameter 11.8 cm, Height 5.5 cm
