Kiyomizu-yaki Murata Kōnosuke GuinomI (Sake Cup) with Okina and Turtle Design
Introducing a guinomi (sake cup) crafted by Kōnosuke Murata from Kiyomizu-yaki.
The exterior of the guinomi features designs of Okina (the old man) and a turtle.
This Okina is from the Noh play “Takasago,” representing the character Jō, and along with the character Uōna (the old woman), symbolizes marital harmony and longevity, making it an auspicious motif.
The kumade (rake) that Okina holds signifies gathering good fortune and is associated with wealth.
In Noh, both the Okina and Uōna are considered spirits of the pine tree, which is depicted on the inner surface of the cup. The pine tree is regarded as a dwelling place for gods and symbolizes longevity due to its year-round greenery.
The turtle, known for the saying “turtles live for thousands of years,” also serves as a symbol of longevity.
The entire design is in underglaze blue, offering a timeless and understated aesthetic that ensures lasting enjoyment without becoming monotonous.
The body is made of thin, white porcelain, giving it a delicate and lightweight feel.
With a cylindrical shape and a flared rim, it provides a pleasant mouthfeel, making it easy to drink from.
This sake vessel is highly auspicious, and it is recommended to use it alongside the Uōna guinomi as a pair.
Dimensions: Mouth Diameter 5.2 cm, Height 6 cm.
