Yamanaka Lacquerware – Omotesenke – Rokurokusai Style Reproduction – Wooden Zelkova Tall Pedestal Tray (Takatsuki) – Rubbing Lacquer Finish
We are pleased to introduce a tall pedestal tray (takatsuki) made of wood, crafted in the Yamanaka lacquerware tradition.
A takatsuki is a vessel with a tall foot used to present food. While they were made of earthenware during the Jomon and Yayoi periods, wooden and lacquered versions became mainstream from the Heian period onward and continue to be used today.
Round-shaped takatsuki were typically used for informal occasions or everyday meals.
In the tea ceremony, they are used as higashiki (dried confectionery trays) in the kinindate (service for honored guests) style. A sheet of white paper is folded and placed on the tray, upon which sweets are served.
Such trays are often seen in period dramas on television, placed beside individuals of high status, bearing sweets and other offerings.
Traditionally, takatsuki have been used as serving vessels for people of noble rank. They are also employed for offerings to gods and Buddhas.
In any case, they are vessels used to express respect to the recipient.
This is an authentic piece, made of wood coated with genuine urushi lacquer, showcasing both a beautiful gloss and refined craftsmanship.
The upper portion features a gently rounded design, while the exterior is finely grooved, demonstrating the considerable labor and high level of skill involved in its creation.
The rubbing lacquer finish enhances the natural grain of the zelkova wood, lending a warm and organic feel.
The wide base provides excellent stability and a solid presence.
Since placing it directly on tatami mats is not considered improper, it is highly useful for serving tea and sweets at temples and other formal settings.
By conveying respect, the piece exudes elegance and refined aesthetics.
Having one of these ensures long-term use, making it an essential item for households that host distinguished guests.
