Introducing a wooden lacquerware piece from Yamanaka Nuri. This versatile item can be used both as a serving plate and a tray.
It can also serve as a tea tray. The low edge design makes it unobtrusive, allowing it to be used elegantly for items such as sweets.
The lacquer work is known as Negoro-nuri, which originates from Negoro-ji Temple in Kishu. It involves applying a black base coat followed by a red topcoat. The red topcoat is intentionally worn down to reveal the black beneath, creating a patterned effect.
The lacquer is applied in swirling lines that are raised and only these sections are polished down to reveal the black underneath.
The reverse side is similarly lacquered, adding extra craftsmanship to the piece.
Being entirely wooden, it is very lightweight, delicate, and easy to handle.
