Wajima Lacquerware, by Wazen Kurokawa – Chūnatsume (Medium-sized Tea Caddy) with Karako (Children) Design, Maki-e, Wood, Urushi Lacquer, Inlaid with Blue Shell
We are pleased to introduce a wooden chūnatsume (medium-sized tea caddy) from Wajima lacquerware, crafted by Wazen Kurokawa.
A chūnatsume is a tea utensil used for serving thin tea, and it is named after the shape of the fruit of the jujube tree, which resembles the caddy.
Smaller than the larger natsume, it is therefore called chūnatsume.
The lid of the caddy is decorated with three children (karako), painted in colored lacquer and gold, while the body features gold speckles, creating a rich and luxurious visual effect.
“Karako” refers to children depicted in Chinese style, particularly wearing clothes and hairstyles from the Tang dynasty. Originally a theme in genre painting, the motif of karako is frequently found in decorative arts inspired by Chinese taste.
In tea utensils, the design of three karako is commonly seen and has been in use since ancient times.
Each child figure is partially inlaid with blue shell (a form of abalone shell), which shimmers when the light hits it, adding to its brilliance and visual appeal.
The design is extremely intricate and delicately executed, requiring high skill and significant craftsmanship.
This tea caddy can be used year-round, as the design is not specific to any particular season.
