Made in Japan – Thin Rectangular Suiban Board (Usuita) with Clam Shell-Style Edges (Hamaguriba) – Natural Cedar (Flower Base)
We are pleased to introduce a thin, rectangular usuita (display board) made in Japan.
An usuita is a thin board placed beneath a flower container, serving a similar role to a flower stand when displaying arrangements in a tokonoma (alcove).
Hamaguriba refers to the shape of the four edges of the board, which are finished in sharp, angled forms reminiscent of the closing edges of a clam shell (hamaguri).
This usuita falls under the “Sō” (informal/grass) category of the tea ceremony classification system known as “Shin–Gyō–Sō” (formal–semi-formal–informal). It is appropriate for casual, everyday tea gatherings.
“Shin” is used in formal settings such as offering tea to deities or distinguished guests. “Gyō” represents a middle ground between “Shin” and “Sō.”
To harmonize with this usuita, it is best to pair it with a flower container in the “Sō” category.
“Sō”-style flower containers include unglazed or naturally glazed ceramic pieces—examples being Iga ware, Shigaraki ware, Bizen ware, and Tamba ware. Bamboo flower containers are also commonly used in this context.
These guidelines in the tea ceremony are grounded in thoughtful aesthetics and tradition, and by following them, both the flowers and the utensils are allowed to shine in their best light.
Made of natural cedar, each piece showcases a unique wood grain, adding individual character to the board.
