Made in Japan – “Tora-take” Bamboo Tea Bowl Holder, Horizontal Weave
This is a Japanese-made bamboo tea bowl holder known as a wan-tou.
A wan-tou is a cylindrical container used in the practice of sencha tea ceremony, designed to hold small sencha-wan (sencha tea bowls).
While the number may vary depending on the school or tradition, it typically holds a set of 5 to 10 stacked tea bowls.
To allow for easy removal, a vertical slit is left open on part of the front.
Although this tea bowl holder is not particularly large, it is intricately woven from bamboo. The mouth and foot areas are reinforced, showcasing craftsmanship and traditional artisan techniques.
The exterior surface uses the bamboo’s outer skin, giving it a smooth finish.
This particular wan-tou is made from tora-take—bamboo with natural brown streaks scattered throughout—giving it a rustic, subdued elegance that reflects the spirit of wabi.
Sencha tea bowls are generally small because they are used with high-quality tea leaves.
The purpose is not simply to quench thirst, but to savor the sweetness and umami of the tea. A small amount is slowly sipped and appreciated.
Another reason for the small size is that the same tea leaves are steeped multiple times—first, second, and third infusions—each revealing different flavors.
Please ensure that the diameter of the tea bowls you place inside is smaller than the inner diameter of this wan-tou.
