Takaoka Copperware: Kensui (Tea Ceremony Water Container) – Yari no Saya (Spear Sheath) – Karakane
We are pleased to introduce this Kensui made of Takaoka copperware.
Kensui is a vessel used in the tea ceremony to discard water used to cleanse the tea bowl.
The term “ken” means to tilt and spill, and it is commonly referred to as “koboshi.”
Karakane is an alloy of copper mixed with small amounts of lead and tin, giving it a dark hue.
Its manufacturing method originally came from China, which is why it is called “karakane,” meaning copper that was transmitted from the Tang Dynasty.
This Kensui is named for its resemblance to a sheath that covers the tip of a spear and is one of seven types of Kensui.
It has a cylindrical shape with a flared opening, and the lid is removed by inserting a ladle handle through it.
The upper part of the exterior is slightly thinner, while the lower part is darker, creating a gradient effect.
Dimensions: Diameter 10 cm, Height 13.5 cm.
