Ken sui is a vessel used in the tea ceremony to discard water used to cleanse the matcha bowl.
The term “ken” means to tilt and spill, and it is also commonly referred to as “koboshi.”
“Karakan” (唐銅) refers to copper alloyed with a small amount of lead or tin, giving it a dark hue. The method of making this alloy was originally transmitted from China, hence it is called copper that came from “Tang.”
This ken sui is named because it resembles the metal fitting covering the end of a ceremonial pole. It is one of the seven types of ken sui.
It has a cylindrical shape with a slightly rounded bottom. The upper part of the exterior is a bit thinner, while the lower part becomes darker, creating a gradient effect.
