Shōraku Kiln Black Raku Painting different-Glaze Flat Matcha Bowl by Shōraku Sasaki
Introducing a Black Raku matcha bowl from the Shōraku kiln, created by Shōraku Sasaki.
Raku ware is said to have been founded by the immigrant candy maker (and father of the first head of the Raku family, Chōjirō), and it is believed that the name “Raku” was adopted after Sen no Rikyū received the “Raku” gold seal from Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Raku ware emerged as a uniquely Japanese creation alongside the rise of the tea ceremony, and its characteristics—such as texture, shape, and color—are all in harmony with the spirit of the tea ceremony.
There are two main types of Raku ware: Red Raku (Aka-raku) and Black Raku (Kuro-raku). Black Raku has long been made using Kamo River stones.
A black, opaque glaze is applied to the pottery, which is then fired in a small kiln with a bellows (a device that blows air to promote combustion). The pottery is removed from the kiln, which has been heated by charcoal to a red-hot temperature, and immediately immersed in hot water.
The vivid black color and the soft texture unique to Raku ware are achieved through this immersion process.
It is said that Sen no Rikyū favored Black Raku.
A flat matcha bowl is characterized by a wider mouth and a lower height compared to a standard matcha bowl. This design allows the matcha to cool more quickly, making it ideal for enjoying tea in warmer weather.
The wide mouth is designed to cool the matcha faster, allowing the guest to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea, reflecting the host’s thoughtful hospitality.
This matcha bowl features a painting different-glaze technique known as kakewake. In kakewake, two different glazes are applied to opposite halves of the vessel to create a striking contrast in color.
The bowl is made with a yellowish-brown clay body, with black glaze applied to one half, allowing the natural texture of the clay to be appreciated as well. The rim of the bowl is slightly turned up, making it shallow enough to prevent spillage, yet still easy to whisk and serve matcha.
This matcha bowl is very light, with a size that fits comfortably in the hand, making it both practical and easy to handle.
