Made in Japan — Pure Silk Sukiya-bukuro (Tea Ceremony Accessory Pouch) — Banreki Donsu Brocade
This piece is a Japanese-made sukiya-bukuro crafted from pure silk.
A sukiya-bukuro is a pouch used in the tea ceremony to carry items such as the fukusa (silk cloth), folding fan, yōji (sweets pick), kaishi paper, Shino-bukuro envelope, and other accessories.
Because it functions much like a small handbag for traditional dress, it can be used not only for tea gatherings but also when going out in Japanese attire.
The term Banreki Donsu refers to brocade woven during the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty in China, a period famed for its exceptional textile production.
Brocades from this era are characterized by vibrant colors and opulent patterns, reflecting a distinctive aesthetic style that defined the Wanli period.
This particular textile features a beautiful design in which a lattice pattern is filled with lozenge-shaped karahana (Chinese floral) motifs. It is well regarded as a classic “meibutsu-gire” (famous specialty textile) in the Wanli style.
