Kosai’s Sudareshi Shell Incense Container
This is an introduction to Kosai’s sudareshi shell incense container.
An incense container, known as “kōgō” in Japanese, is a lidded vessel used to hold incense. In the tea ceremony, it is often placed in a charcoal container, displayed on a shelf, or placed on a cloth or paper mat in the tokonoma (alcove) for decoration.
Incense containers are frequently used as objects of appreciation and come in many varieties.
This particular incense container is crafted from a genuine sudareshi shell. The exterior features a white surface with irregular reddish-brown patterns, presenting a beautiful natural appearance.
Both the interior of the body and the lid are fully covered with gold leaf, resulting in a dazzling brilliance when the lid is opened.
