Introducing a “kensui” (waste water container) by Takahashi Rakusai, made from Shigaraki ware.
A kensui is used in the tea ceremony to dispose of water used to cleanse the matcha bowl. The term “ken” means to tilt or spill, and it is commonly referred to as “koboshi.”
This piece is characterized by its rough clay, mixed with small stones from Shigaraki, showcasing the natural qualities of earthenware. The surface features visible stones and a deep brown firing color, imparting a strong texture.
Green glaze drips can be seen both inside and outside, adding to its aesthetic appeal. The body has rectangular stamps at various points, providing an interesting variation.
The wide opening and rounded body, which narrows at the middle, is reminiscent of the shape of a falconer’s bait bag, giving it the name “efugo.” Its broad diameter allows for easy disposal of water, and its solid, stable form makes it a practical kenzui.
Dimensions: Diameter 12.5 cm, Height 9 cm.
