Traditional Craft – Nambu Ironware Tetsubin, No. 9 Hexagonal Pattern, 1.1L, For Direct Heat
We are pleased to introduce a traditional craft: the Nambu Tetsubin (iron kettle).
Nambu ironware is said to have originated during the height of the Fujiwara clan in Hiraizumi, Oshu (present-day Iwate Prefecture), which left behind a flourishing culture. With a history spanning over 900 years, it is a craft of enduring tradition.
Renowned for its unique iron-sand refining techniques and refined aesthetic design, Nambu ironware has earned international acclaim.
Water boiled in a tetsubin contains iron, an essential nutrient for the production of healthy blood. Since ancient times, Japanese people have supplemented dietary iron not only from food, but also from water boiled in iron kettles and from dishes prepared in iron cookware.
This type of iron (ferrous iron) is more readily absorbed by the body compared to the iron naturally present in food. In today’s world, where cookware made from various materials is widely used, iron intake from daily meals tends to be insufficient. Iron deficiency can lead to symptoms such as fatigue and anemia.
When water is boiled in a tetsubin or iron pot, chlorine and other substances in the water are reduced, resulting in water that stays warm longer, has a softer taste, and is more pleasant to drink.
Thus, a tetsubin not only contributes to health, but also enhances the taste of water—truly offering two benefits in one.
The exterior features a kikkō (tortoiseshell) design, reminiscent of a turtle’s shell. In Japan, the turtle is a symbol of longevity, as expressed in the saying “Cranes live a thousand years, turtles live ten thousand.” The kikkō motif is considered an auspicious pattern, cherished since ancient times as a symbol of good fortune.
Dating back to the Heian period, the kikkō design remains one of the most classic and timeless motifs still in use today.
This tetsubin has a capacity of 1.1 liters, allowing you to boil a substantial amount of water at once. It can also be used in combination with a thermal pot to store hot water for gradual use.
The handle is fixed (non-movable) for durability, and the kettle is designed specifically for direct heat use—both practical and convenient.
