Mino Ware – Kato Jin-made Tenmoku Glaze Haikatsugi Sake Cup
We are pleased to introduce a sake cup with a Tenmoku glaze from Mino ware.
Tenmoku glaze is a dark brownish-black iron-rich glaze, and it is said to have originated during the Kamakura period when Japanese Zen monks brought back matcha bowls (Tenmoku chawan) from China.
The Tenmoku chawan is considered highly prestigious in the tea ceremony and is treated as a special piece, often used for the “Kijin-ten” (ceremony for nobility).
There are many types of Tenmoku glaze, and this particular piece features the haikatsugi style, which gives it a unique appearance resembling ash accumulation due to a special kiln effect. The result is a rustic, calm atmosphere with a touch of luxury.
The cup is made from reddish-brown clay, shaped on a potter’s wheel, with a slight curve. The rim is slightly flared outward, making it easy to drink from.
The glaze stops towards the top, and the foot has a distinctive, stepped shape.
The sophisticated color is well-suited for sake and, with its simple and timeless design, this piece can be enjoyed for many years.
