Mino Ware: Ryoji Hayashi, Sozan Kiln, Red Shino, Iron Painting, Matcha Bowl
We would like to introduce a matcha bowl from Ryoji Hayashi’s Sozan kiln, known for its Shino ware.
Shino ware is one of the representative ceramics of Mino. It is a type of pottery not found in other regions.
When it comes to Shino ware, the Shozan kiln, led by Ryoji Hayashi, is quite famous.
There are various types of Shino, but this matcha bowl is classified as “Red Shino.” It is thinner than the Akashino and richer in color than the Benishino, striking a balance between the two hues. This unique shade makes it a particularly rare Shino piece.
The bowl showcases a pale reddish-brown color with noticeable variations in shade, offering a texture that allows one to fully appreciate the depth of the pottery’s character.
Numerous pinholes characteristic of Shino are visible all over, while areas of white glaze and intricate kiln effects serve as points of interest.
On the exterior, there are iron-painted brush strokes that add a striking accent. The interior features wheel-turned marks, and the outer surface has several vertical carvings, creating an uneven texture that feels comfortable to hold.
There are visible fingerprints from the artist where the bowl was dipped in glaze, exposing areas of unglazed clay, contributing to its design.
The shape is cylindrical with a straight profile, providing depth and a slightly larger, robust presence.
This richly nuanced “Red Shino” can be considered a rare and valuable item.
Dimensions: 11.5 cm × 11 cm × height 9 cm.
