Made in Japan Wooden Koma (Spinning Top) Shaped Tobacco Box with Lid, Urushi Lacquered
Introducing a wooden tobacco box made in Japan.
Originally, this was used to store shredded tobacco in a tobacco tray (tabakobon) used in the tea ceremony. While it was originally designed to hold finely cut tobacco, it can also serve as a small container with a lid for other items.
The tobacco box would typically be placed on a tobacco tray along with a pipe (kiseru) and an ash blower, positioned near the main guest in a tea gathering.
In modern times, since few people actually smoke using a pipe (kiseru), this item is mostly used as a decorative piece.
The box is carved from wood, making it very lightweight, and it requires considerable effort and high craftsmanship.
The entire exterior is decorated with a spinning top (koma) pattern, while the lid is painted in a combination of red, dark brown, white, and green. The body uses four colors: yellow, red, green, and dark brown, creating a vivid and colorful design.
The inside is coated entirely in dark brown lacquer, and the underside of the lid features a delicate crosshatch pattern, showing that craftsmanship extends even to areas that are not visible.
Koma-nuri (spinning top lacquer) is a type of lacquerware, where concentric circular patterns are painted in red, yellow, green, dark brown, and other colors. This technique began around the Edo period in Japan.
The spinning top (koma) is considered a symbol of good fortune, and its beautiful, colorful design makes it a traditional and popular motif.
Though small in size, this item is a masterpiece that embodies the skill of many artisans.

这款木制莨盒来自日本，原本是用于茶道中放置莨盆（烟草盆）的一部分，主要用来放置切烟草的容器，但也可以作为带盖的小物件收纳盒使用。
